It’s almost impossible to picture the Upwey-Tecoma Football Netball Club without Jacqui Cooke. But once upon a time, she arrived from Yarra Glen — drawn in by a club that felt like family: fun, competitive, and full of connection. She started in B Grade under the legendary Val O’Meara, and it didn’t take long for her to become more than just a player — she became part of the soul of the place.
From the very beginning, Jacqui has been all heart. Funny and fiercely loyal. Featuring regularly in the “Tezza’s Tigers” write-ups, she brought consistency on the court and even more off it — with her trademark blend of cheek, courage, and unconditional love for the Yellow & Black. She’s seen the Club through highs, lows, and everything in between — coached by the best, surrounded by teammates who quickly became lifelong friends.
But it’s never just been about playing for Jacqui. She has captained, coordinated, encouraged, and shown up time and time again — with her whole heart, her wicked sense of humour, and that classic Cookie spirit. Whether it’s a Grand Final or a grim 9AM away game in sideways rain, she brings the same energy.
On the footy field, Jacqui helped form the Club’s very first Women’s team. She was quickly given the nickname “Vinnie”, as her frizzy afro-esque hairstyle reminded the coach of former Carlton player Vin Catoggio. Nuggety, tough, and always up for the contest (and the post-game banter), she’s the teammate who’ll smash her opponent at a stoppage, then turn to them mid-game and compliment them on the colour of their boots.
200 is more than just a number of games played. It’s 200 games of loyalty, laughter, leadership and love amongst the netball and women’s football. It’s been a journey of sweat, stories, and side-splitting sideline banter. And through it all, Jacqui has been the glue, the grit, and the giggle that’s held so much of this Club together.
Congratulations, Cookie. You’re not just a 200 Gamer and a newly minted Life Member of our Club — you’re a once-in-a-generation heartbeat. And the best part? You’re still exactly the same legend you were on day one!
